The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is one of the five breeds that Poles can be proud of. However, it was the only one which gained worldwide popularity. The breed is about 800 years old. In 1514, a Polish merchant, Kazimierz Grabski, brought these dogs to Scotland while collecting sheep from there. Their shepherding skills surprised the natives so much that they immediately wanted these sheepdogs in their country. Today, the Lowland Sheepdog is still a working dog but people choose it mainly because of its predisposition to be a family dog.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog with a solid and muscular body. The height at the withers for a male dog is 45-50 cm. Females, however, are not much shorter, they measure 42-47 cm. The average life expectancy of a representative of this breed is 12-15 years.

It is a great companion for playing with children because it tolerates pulling on its hair or ears. However, the Lowland Sheepdog was not born with this tolerance. It is necessary to get it used to our children as early as possible. This dog is a great friend of man. It recognizes human feelings perfectly - it worries when you are sad. Along with its sensitivity and emotionality, there is the constant need for attention. The Lowland Sheepdog will be pleased with the owner who will be able to give it the right amount of attention. When considering buying a sheepdog, please keep in mind that it is very active and you will be responsible for this activity. Daily long walks combined with fun or sports will be the best options. During walks, it usually does not bother other dogs and is not conflicting. This also applies to the animals we keep at home. You have to reckon with the fact that each time the dog comes from the yard, you will have to clean up because it brings a lot of dirt, mud, etc.
Training this dog can only be problematic because of its stubbornness. It should be noted, however, that this is a corrupt dog. It's easy to convince it of everything, e.g. with the help of food. During training, it shows its intelligence and cleverness. Memorizing new commands is a piece of cake for the Lowland Sheepdog.
- Coat
At first glance, it may seem that the Polish Lowland Sheepdog's hair takes a huge amount of time. Fortunately, this is not the case. The dog does not shed much. Its hair is not clingy and it is easy to clean. Brushing once a week should be sufficient. Baths are usually performed when the pet is completely dirty. You have to pay much attention to the area of ââthe dog's jaw because food sticks to the hair there.
The Lowland Sheepdog comes in a variety of colorus, all of them are allowed.
- Eyes
As for eye care, it is not complicated. It is enough to clean the dog's eyes regularly to remove secretions. The most common method is a cotton swab soaked in a special liquid for cleaning the dog's eyes.
- Ears
Due to their drooping shape, the Lowland Sheepdog's ears are very prone to inflammation. It is necessary to supervise them constantly and take care of their hygiene. In the event that this is not enough and something goes wrong with them, you need to go to the vet.
- Claws
It is recommended to trim the shepherd's claws depending on the surface on which it moves most often. Hard surfaces, such as pavements and asphalt, will wear them down more quickly. On the other hand, if the dog runs more on the grass, the claws should be trimmed more often.
All colors of coat are allowed.
The dog's entire body is covered with a dense, thick, rough coat with a soft undercoat. The topcoat is straight but slightly wavy coat is also acceptable. Hair falling from the forehead covers the eyes in a characteristic way.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are hardy and resilient dogs. It may happen, however, that they will be affected by such ailments as:
- surviving botal wire
- joint dysplasia
- diabetes
- otitis
- central progressive retinal atrophy
- hypothyroidism
You also have to take into account that the dog may be allergic to something. Therefore, if we see symptoms indicative of this ailment, it is worth doing allergy tests.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a glutton who will use every opportunity to eat something. It will not be a problem to make it eat, on the contrary - it will be difficult to drag it away from food. You should keep an eye on your pet so that it does not become overweight by its greed. Its diet should be balanced, age-appropriate and rich in nutrients that support the proper development of your dog.
