The Dachshund Standard Long-haired is derived from hunting hounds, including e.g. bibarhund and dachsbracke, used in badger hunting. Cynologists estimate that dogs with a long body and short legs already lived in ancient times. The long-haired dachshund appeared in Germany in the 16th century. This breed is the result of a cross between a smooth-haired dachshund and English and German spaniels. This multi-talented hunting dog was appreciated for dragging prey from the burrow, scenting for it and scaring it away. The long-haired dachshund is a very courageous dog that is not afraid of either foxes or badgers. It does well in water and densely covered terrain, which is why hunters appreciate it very much.
The long-haired dachshund pedigree book appeared in the 1880s. However, it wasn't until eight decades later that the long-haired dachshund became very fashionable. After the fashion for the long-haired dachshund in the 1960s, the wire-haired variety became popular. However, the beginning of this century brought the long-haired dachshund back into favor.

The Dachshunds Standard Long-haired have a milder character than the smooth-haired variety. This is because their veins contain the blood of spaniels and Irish Setters. Their training is also easier, which doesn't mean they can't be wayward and stubborn. These intelligent and very affectionate dogs with a cheerful disposition are wonderful companions of man. Depending on the situation, they are sensitive and delicate, or bold and aggressive. An alert dachshund knows how to earn respect and attention. It is always ready to defend its family. Long-haired dachshunds are very attached to their owners, and as a result they can be possessive and jealous. An additional difficulty is the fact that their keepers, often infatuated with the dog, forget about all the rules. Dachshunds require proper training. By nature, the long-haired dachshunds are independent. Don't take their firmness and willingness to decide as disobedience. With a sensitive and consistent upbringing, the long-haired dachshund will be an obedient and devoted household member. The advantage is that the dachshund learns quickly and willingly, and a well-guided dachshund will begin to reveal a number of its advantages, including comedy and acting talents.
The long-haired dachshund tolerates children and other dogs. However, it should not live with other pets under the same roof, due to its strong hunting instinct. It can get used to the cat, as long as the socialization takes place in the young years of the dog but they are unlikely to have great affection for each other. The dachshund requires a moderate amount of exercise. It likes to run without a leash but you have to be careful because it may run away, stunned by an interesting smell.
The coat of the long-haired dachshund is silky, soft, even and straight or slightly wavy. It forms the so-called a 'feathering' on the limbs and a 'flag' on the tail. The dog needs brushing if necessary. Usually, healthy hair does not need these treatments. If necessary, trim any excess hair between your dog's toe pads. A dog's claws should be kept short. Bathing only when our dachshund really gets dirty.
The long-haired dachshund coat may be single-colored:

The coat is straight, shiny with an undercoat. The coat is tight-fitting. The hair is extended on the neck and lower abdomen, hanging on the ears, forming a feathering of the same length on the limbs, the longest on the tail, where it forms a flag.
The Dachshunds Standard Long-haired enjoy good health and great strength. They are a long-lived breed. All dachshunds, regardless of their coat and size, have problems with falling out discs. It is a natural consequence of an elongated body structure. Do not let your pet jump high up or down from a great height. Also, take care of the dachshund's teeth to prevent tartar build-up on them. You can provide your dog with the teethers and follow a proper diet.
Long-haired dachshunds are greedy dogs with a tendency to gain weight. They are also picky dogs so they must not be pampered. Avoid additional snacks between meals. Dachshunds gain weight very quickly. Dogs of this breed require a strict diet and a large portion of daily exercise. You can buy your dog a good dry food for medium or small breeds, or a special one for dachshunds. These types of foods are well-balanced, just choose grain-free ones with a high content of fresh or dried meat. Make sure that your dog's diet is adjusted to the needs of your dachshund.
A good solution is to use the Barf diet for the long-haired dachshunds. It is based on raw meat, cartilage bones, raw giblets, without the addition of rice, pasta or groats.
